Costume jewelry is a 20th cent phenomenon. Some of the most well-known names are Liz Claiborne, Sarah Coventry, Avon. A few lesser known but just as quality are Trafari, Monet and Emmons. as well as Ultracraft and JJ, Assessor craft, Coro.
Many of the piece of costume jewelry were copied by the high fashioned expensive jewelry as well as Vic versa. the Trafari jelly belly jewelry were copied by the high fashioned. (see picture of rabbit jewelry broach) Coro had a number of pieces that were much like Tiffany pieces only in less expensive metals for example.
Some like Hoffman worked in both precious metals and lesser valued ones t the same time.
"The most commonly found vintage pieces are from two manufacturers. The first is Frederick S. Hoffman and Company, a US firm. Their pieces are set in either white metal with a rhodium (stay-bright) finish, or, less frequently, in sterling silver. "Butterfly Wing Jewelry By Paula Kirwan, Booth B-2022
This picture of a Butterfly pendent is the white metal one.
The costume jewelry industry was almost a Patton Place of company's taking over each other as they out paced the other or the other went into failure.
Monet takeover by Liz Claiborne is an example of this.
The history of Monet Jewelry, which began in 1927, has managed to maintain their unique designs and change with the times. However, people who want genuine Monet pieces should know the various companies who have had the rights to create these trademark designs. From 1969 to 1989, General Mills acquired Monocraft Products Company, the company that held rights to Monet the longest. From 1989 to 1994, the jewelry was sold through Crystal Brands Jewelry Group, and from 1994 to 2000, Chase Capital Partners, Lattice Holding. Presently, Liz Claiborne, Inc. produces Monet Jewelry, a right they've held since 2000.Read more: What Is Monet Jewelry? | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/about_5052474_monet-jewelry.html#ixzz1aribwZgt
There were also Some founders that started multiple company's at the same time. Charles H Stuart was one of these.
"Most collectors of vintage jewelry are well acquainted with the designer mark Sarah Cov. However, the founder of this company, Charles H. Stuart, wasn't content to found a company solely in honor of his daughter Sarah. He also had a sister company to honor his wife - Caroline Emmons Stuart called Emmons Jewelry."The Finishing Touch Vintage Jewelry: Caroline Emmons Jewelry - Sarah Coventry's Lesser Known Sister Company in Jewelry May 21, 2010 - 9:12am
A second source credits the name to a grandchild.
"Sarah Coventry jewelry was named after the granddaughter of Charles H. Stuart, the founder of the company. It was established in 1949 and is recognized as the oldest direct selling jewelry company in the world."Sarah Coventry From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most of the jewelry from the Emmons Company were never signed or marked. So as with this pictured broach unless there is proof of where they came must be labeled Emmons Type.
Emmons went out of business in 1981 do to bankruptcy, it was sold/taken over by Sarah Coventry until this company also closed its doors in 1984. Sara Coventry line started back up under P B Manufactures its new owners
“However, Sarah Coventry jewelry re-opened years later by new owners and is currently being distributed by representatives via catalogues, the internet, home shopping networks, and other means.” Sarah Coventry From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
